Dec. 7, 2022 - A Smithson Valley High School student has been named the 2022 Southern Texas PGA Junior Golfer of the Year.
Cole Cantu, an 11th-grade student at SVHS, will be recognized during the Southern Texas PGA President’s Dinner and Awards Banquet on Monday, Feb. 13, 2023, in Houston.
“Winning the STPGA Player of the Year is a terrific honor as there are exceptional golfers in south Texas,” says Cantu, who is a member of the SVHS golf team and the SVHS honors orchestra. “I enjoy working on my golf game, competing in tournaments and seeing improvement each time I play.”
Cantu, who practices his golf game daily and competes in tournaments around the state, has been playing golf for nine years. He won the 2022 San Antonio City Junior Championship and hopes to compete with his fellow Rangers in the state tournament, vowing to keep working to reach that goal.
The Junior Golfer of the Year award is based on participation in the STPGA junior golf programs, service to the STPGA and the game of golf; academic achievements and contributions with the local community; image and ability to inspire fellow junior golfers; and playing ability and participating in local, section and national events.
