Sept. 14, 2022 - For the fourth year in a row, the Comal Independent School District has received the District of Distinction award by the Texas Art Education Association (TAEA), which began offering the honor four years ago.
Only 1.4 percent of Texas schools, approximately 16 school districts, have earned this distinction four years in a row, placing Comal ISD among the very best of the very best. In fact, of the 1,200 public and private schools who applied for the honor this year, 59 received the distinction.
“This is truly a testament to our amazing art teachers,” said Mandy Epley, acting superintendent of Comal ISD. “They consistently provide opportunities for our students to showcase their talent through both competitions and in area galleries. These opportunities are what helps them see their own potential beyond the classroom and gives them the confidence to continue to pursue their passions.”
The District of Distinction award recognizes districts which provide a well-rounded education that advocates and integrates visual arts curriculum to inspire creativity and build social emotional learning that connects learners to their community and beyond.
Currently, Comal ISD has 63 art teachers in elementary, middle and high school campuses. On average, 15,000 students participate in art classes throughout the district. Elementary campuses have their own art instructor with weekly lessons while middle and high school campuses offer a variety of courses including drawing, painting, sculpting, advanced placement art history and studio art. In addition, student organizations such as the National Art Honor Society and art clubs are available on high school campuses.
The application process for the District of Distinction award is quite rigorous. Each district submits documentation proving it qualified based on a 14-point rubric. The 59 distinguished districts will be honored at the TAEA Administration and Supervision Meeting and during the TAEA Fall Conference General Assembly on Friday, Nov. 11, in McAllen.
Congratulations!
