May 17, 2022 - A Canyon Middle School team is this year’s winner of the 10th Annual Comal ISD Travis Lamb Memorial ‘Name That Book’ Middle School Book Bowl. The team of eighth-grade students won with an impressive score of 75 out of 80.
A district-wide contest, the Travis Lamb Memorial ‘Name that Book’ Bowl is a Lone Star book challenge sponsored by the district’s middle school librarians. Annually, participating middle school campuses form teams of six students each who test their knowledge of the 20 books from the Texas Library Association’s Lone Star reading list.
The teams compete in four rounds of 20 questions each, and the team with the most correct responses after the fourth round is the winner.
Members of this year’s winning team from CMS include Aspen Balbuena, Alexis Gillette, Brendan Hooper, Sydney Mace, Caden Scales and Nikki Tran. The CMS librarian is Elizabeth Lamb.
“Name That Book is a great way to create excitement about books and reading among middle school students,” says Lamb. “Each team enjoys quality literature and bonds as a team, forming strong friendships. It is a great way to strengthen reading skills, and it appeals to middle schoolers’ competitive spirits.”
Lamb was planning the first Name That Book Bowl with a fellow librarian in 2013 when her son died in a car accident. His name was Travis, and he was an avid reader and enjoyed competitions as well as trivia, so the contest was named in his memory.
“I know he would love it as much as these students do,” she says.
